About The Thai LanguageFormerly known as Siamese, Thai is the official language of Thailand. The number of Thai speakers is unknown, with estimates ranging from 20 million to more than 35 million. Thai also has its own distinctive writing system with a beautiful script. As many as half the total number of Thai speakers, whether in or outside Thailand, are not native speakers of the language, but most can at least function in Standard Thai, which is used by educated speakers, media, and the government. The speakers on the Pimsleur tapes are speaking Standard Thai, and by imitating their speech, you will maximize your chances of making yourself understood throughout Thailand.
